"Our daughter is a hemiplegic as a result of a stroke, which means that one side of her body is weaker and considerably thinner than the other side. She hated ballet, but the thought of self-defence appealed to her and us. We contacted a few clubs and found that nobody would consider taking her. We had no idea that the day we spoke to Sensei John Richards and Sensei Paul Beckford, that our lives would change so much. She calls Sensei Paul Beckford, the BFP (Big Friendly Paul). He is brilliant with kids in general, but he instilled focus in her and she is able to now use her weaker side much more efficiently. Getting a belt possibly every 3 months really motivates her and her smile from her achievements is across her face for days after the grading. At the Summer Club, we met Pansy, who is a force to be reckoned with, but with a heart of gold. She treats her no differently, which we support. Sensei John Richards is a family man and our daughter has been fortunate to be taught by both his sons who she respects and looks up to. However, if truth be told, it is Afiya who is her true inspiration. This is not a club, but a family, but our journey has only just started. We have been blessed to be a part of it.
